Races organised by the East Surrey Hunt were first reported in the Sporting Magazine in 1843. The course was at Peckham Rye, on an extensive piece of ground next to the Rosemary Branch Tavern, and the first two day meeting on Tuesday 16th and Wednesday 17th May 1843 saw the feature Peckham Stakes over 2 miles go to Mr Knowles’ Dart. Meetings were held annually for the next 5 years with a final meeting on Thursday 21st September 1848.
